Never Be the Barrier

In one of the most tender—and yet fierce—moments in all of Scripture, we see Jesus become indignant.

“They were bringing children to Him… but the disciples rebuked them.

When Jesus saw this, He was indignant…” (Mark 10:13–14)

He wasn’t annoyed.

He wasn’t mildly frustrated.

He was deeply stirred—because someone was standing between a seeker and the Savior.

That’s what sets Jesus off: barriers.

It wasn’t about theology or behavior. It was about access. And when the disciples tried to block it, Jesus made it clear:

Nothing matters more than the posture of the heart and it made me think about my wife today…

I thought about Shelly—her consistent joy, her enduring childlike faith, her steady optimism, even through the chaos I’ve brought to our journey together. Her spirit has created a home where our kids feel seen, loved, and safe to ask hard questions.

Olivia recently said to a friend:

“You can tell my mom anything.”

And that’s what it’s like with Jesus too.

He’s not looking for perfect theology.

He’s looking for pursuit.

The Kingdom isn’t earned—it’s received. Not through performance, ritual, or intellect—but through the openness of a child who simply trusts.

Jesus didn’t tolerate the children. He embraced them. Laid His hands on them. Blessed them.

That’s the heart of the Gospel.

And if we’re following Jesus—truly following—we don’t get to decide who’s “worthy” to come close. We’re not meant to be guards at the door of grace. We’re meant to be guides to the arms of God.

So the challenge for me today—and maybe for you—is this:

Am I leading with love, or am I unknowingly creating obstacles?

Because when someone is running toward Jesus, the last thing I ever want to be…is in their way.
