The Sadducees didn’t believe in the resurrection. So what did they do? They brought a convoluted, theological trap to Jesus and disguised it as a question about marriage in the afterlife (Mark 12: 13-18). It wasn’t rooted in curiosity. It wasn’t rooted in humility. It was all about pride, control, and preserving a system that kept them comfortable.
And before we roll our eyes at them, we have to ask:
How often do we mask control as discernment? How often do we seek answers, not because we’re open but because we want to reinforce what we’ve already decided?
Jesus doesn’t take the bait.
He exposes the root issue with precision:
“Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God?”
I’ve had seasons where I was going through the motions. Doing the work. Trying to follow the “rules” through lenses of legalism. It wasn’t about knowing God’s power. It was about managing the experience.
But the moment we trade revelation for control, we lose the heart of it all.
Jesus doesn’t just correct their theology. He reframes reality.
God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
Not historical figures. Not ancient stories. Living, breathing souls in His presence. And that includes us.
Too often, men and women walk through life spiritually asleep…technically alive, but functionally dead. Surviving. Managing. Avoiding risk. Avoiding real faith.
But God didn’t save us to survive. He saves us to live.
Fully.
Freely.
Boldly.
Eternally.
If I’m not walking in the power of His Word, the clarity of His voice, and the freedom of His presence, then I’m not really living. I’m maintaining.
And that’s not why Jesus came.
I don’t want to waste this life in theological traps or performance-driven religion. I want to know Him. Hear Him. Live like eternity starts now because it does.
It’s time to stop playing dead.
It’s time to live like He’s the God of the living. Because He is.
