Retreat BEFORE the Storm

Jesus had just performed one of His greatest miracles—feeding over 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. The crowd was in awe. The disciples were likely still processing what had just happened. The energy in that moment must have been overwhelming.

Yet, Jesus didn’t linger in the excitement (Mark 6:45-46).

He sent His disciples ahead. He dismissed the crowd. Then He withdrew to pray.

This moment speaks volumes. Jesus, the Son of God, retreated—not out of weakness, but out of wisdom.

Do I?

When I experience a great move of God, do I retreat to seek Him? Do I pause to renew my strength, or do I jump to the next thing, running on fumes, relying on my own power?

Yesterday reminded me how quickly I can lose my center. Lack of rest, constant demands, and unrelenting pressure pushed me to a breaking point. And the one who felt it most? The person I love the most—Shelly.

I refuse to let that happen again.

I will never allow a client to dictate my value or diminish the worth of my team. If they choose a path that runs counter to their mission, that’s their mistake—not mine. If that choice leads to lost income, I trust that my Father has a plan that far exceeds anything I expect.

But more than that—I will never compromise my relationship with my wife by bringing my stress, frustration, and raw emotions to her when God is the One who invites me to bring it all to Him.

Jesus Calls Us to Lead Differently

The best time to retreat isn’t just in the storm—but before it comes.

Jesus knew what was ahead. He knew the disciples were about to face another challenge. He knew the storm was coming. And instead of pushing forward, He went to the mountain.

We often think we need to push through—keep moving, keep striving, keep solving problems. But Jesus teaches us a different way.

Before the next challenge…

Before the next storm…

Before the next big decision…

We need to retreat.

That’s where clarity is found. That’s where vision is renewed. That’s where God strengthens me for what’s ahead.

We Need to Stop Waiting Until We Break

Our daily commitment to seek God first is non-negotiable. But moment by moment, we must choose to look up.

We need to prioritize the mountain moments now—so we’re not running on empty when the next challenge comes.
